Last night we hied off to Heat, it being my husband’s and my 20th wedding anniversary
. Heat’s buffet rivals that of Makati Shangrila’s Circle’s buffet. Or maybe it mattered that while we had the lunch buffet in Circles, it was dinner at Heat, so it was cooler and less stressful for us.
Prior to Edsa Shang we heard mass at Christ the King in Green Meadows. Very comfortable as the pews are aplenty and the church is air-conditioned. But a bit bothering in that people aren’t as gracious, very few bother to extend a hand to let anyone get ahead – whether in lines or in traffic. Oh well, maybe everyone was in a hurry? Saw Rhea Santos and husband receive communion. She is so pretty even without makeup or the barest of it. But she doesn’t smile. She had this defiant look. Oh well.
To Heat. The lobby of the hotel
exudes a certain scent everywhere. It assails the senses, bordering on overpowering. Perhaps they should diminish it a little. But the food in Heat and the service make one forget the annoying scent. Choices are seemingly limitless. The quality of the cheeses, breads and cold cuts – excellent. My son liked the soup one determines the ingredients to: he chose laksa, noodles, chicken and beef and it was spicy but not too, he said. Opens the nostrils so any clogged ones get relief, he said. Almost like tom yum, he declared, in terms of taste. It was his clear favorite last night. Me I liked the cheeses and cold cuts and the bread. Oh yes, my son liked the Elle Vive butter. Unsalted but great, he said. Husband was quietly enjoying whatever he got. Maybe it’s a case of diminishing marginal utility to consume because the swooning dwindled somehow.
Japanese stuff – sushis and sashimis. I still think it’s Kimpura that serves them best, hands down. I ate the siopao, not exceptional. Dumplings too. I tried roast beef from my son’s plate: the taste was superb but the meat was a tad tough. I think it was not sliced against the grain which chefs say assure more tender beef. Oh yes there was lechon. It was some two hours after the buffet began but the skin was crispy and fresh. Great. I had the seafood chowder but tasted no seafood. It was cornstarchy-creamy, not bad tasting. The puff pastry/crust on top was delicious. But I didn’t taste any seafood, just a tiny mushroom. there was curacha but it was difficult to get the flesh. Okay, I’m no expert in eating crabs. Other choices were tempura: shrimp and veggies, but I was so stuffed I didn’t bother. Oh and there was Peking duck with hoisin sauced wrapped along with green onions. Yummy. Son like the pizza very much (better than makati shang’s circles, he claimed, and the sole. There was something about the chicken from the Western section that he didn’t like, he said)
Desserts were aplenty: white chocolate and milk chocolate fountains where one could dip marshmallows, fruits, nut-crusted cheesecake. There were all sorts of cakes, pies, etc. there was ice cream they mixed atop the granolithic table if one wanted: mango, vanilla, ube, green tea, etc. with marshmallows, walnuts, cheesecake.
But one can only eat so much.
The staff was friendly and warm. Not the matapobre type at all. As I asked for the bill, the waiter asked if I had a discount card. Think Pen and Crowne Plaza membership cards. If I had, we’d have gotten a 33.3% discount on our food bill. Said card could have been obtained last night for P7k but after being burned by the Manila Pen card, I thought no more membership cards for me. We don’t eat in hotels too much and we’re thinking of not spending any nights in Manila hotels any longer. Out of town possibly in summer. Or maybe during the Christmas break? No plans yet. The Crowne Galleria hotel membership would entitle us to a discount in Holiday Inn Clark. Hmm. Worth a thought. Oh yes, Heat has an ala carte menu. And the waiter thoughtfully asked if we needed a parking pass.

Sunday we were in Shang Mall after mass. yes, we didn’t watch the fight of Manny Pacquiao and dela Hoya live. As we went down Level 2, my son hoping to eat in Fish and Co, what greeted us was a whole crowd of men craning their necks outside the resto whose glass panels were boarded up with craft paper so that only those with particularly long necks who weren’t eating in the resto could see the boxing match. The doors of the resto were closed. So we hied off to the section of the second floor that had other restos. Son said CPK. We said we’d follow as husband and I went to Marks and Spencer to have a blouse of mine replaced. Got that in Power Plant but because M and S is a Store Specialists store it offers convenience: items bought in a different branch can be replaced with a smile in any other branch. That’s service. I showed my blouse to the clerk in the cashier area, she took note of the size I wanted, found one in the Alabang branch and asked if I wanted to have it brought to Shang. A week it would take, possibly. I nodded. No way we’d drive off to Alabang, not even for a nice blouse. haha. As we were about to go to CPK, son texted. “Cafe Provencal na lang” which is at the foot of CPK. Actually I prefer the choices available in CP (without the K). So I was happy.
Son ordered salmon risotto and asked permission if we could order the mozzarella/squid appetizer. I nodded. As we waited for the appetizer, we were given melba toast to spread their mayo/pesto spread on. Sarap. We asked for a second serving and they gave us. It helps I guess that the resto’s waiters have been there for years and “know” us. And the lady who owns manages CP is so gracious. Very genteel and sweet. Wow, the squid in the appetizer basket was so yummy: very tender. And the appetizer basket had a palette of dips served along with it. The serving dish is shaped like a palette, each hole with a different sauce/dip. Sarap: barbecue, pesto, thousand island, etc. Wasn’t too hungry so ordered paella which is no longer in the menu but could be requested. No longer has meat slices, just chorizo and shrimps. And some veggies. Husband ordered turkey which was served with sweet potato topped with walnuts and marshmallows with brown sugar. Also with green beans. He was swooning. But there were portions of the turkey leg that were tough, he said. Son liked the salmon risotto very much. Salmon was roasted, he said.

some days ago we were in Pepper Lunch
at Power Plant. before deciding on which mall, I offered the following choices: Shang, Podium or Power Plant and of course son chose PP because of PL. He’s addicted. And he also wanted to get bread from Bread Talk.
While he was at BT, we went ahead to PL
and ordered his beef curry, I tried the Angus rib eye, husband had beef pepper lunch. We also ordered the kani salad. So good. IN the table next to ours, saw two old ladies each with a salad aside from their beef dishes. I teased my husband “look, they have bigger appetites than us.” but they were thinner: sigh. ANd I noticed in a poster on the wall that they now have an unagi-salmon combination. Husband said he’d get that next time. Angus beef was okay, but so is shimofuri. Couldn’t decide which I prefer more.
A waiter later told me too that PL in Shang will open 19 December. yehey, so we don’t have to go to PP everytime my son wants to eat at PL. At one point, one of the ladies in blue at PL was on her way out and home. She stopped by our table and greeted me by my name. I was stunned and asked her how she knew my name. This blog. So in case you read this, “Hi, lady in blue.”Sorry I failed to get your name. Since the first time I saw her at PL, she has been most gracious so she’s a favorite of mine in the resto. She adds cheer to it.
Lest you think my family of three does notihing but eat, that’s not true. We also sleep and work/study, hahaha. And we watch movies. Like we did Bolt. Cute animated film, the story a feel-good one involving a dog who thought he had super powers when all along he was part of a TV show so everything was controlled. Shades of Truman Show. Oh yes, took pictures of the lift that ferries wheelchair-bound patrons of the theaters in Power Plant. Here goes.

Note that in front of the door to the lift is a huge Christmas decor. Initially we thought that it blocked the entrance to the lift was the mall’s way of saying it was kaput. Son asked the security personnel of the theaters who easily moved it aside so I could get inside the lift.
