Cyma’s Loss was Tender Bob’s Gain…

In Uncategorized on December 30, 2008 at 5:21 am

… at least yesterday. Very hungry at close to 2 pm and wishing to have lunch after the 12 noon mass in our parish, we proceeded to Shang to have lunch at Cyma. But as usual, all the tables were taken and we were told we were fourth in line. This time around, our hungry stomachs told us not to wait until only heaven knew when. So we gave in to my husband’s earlier craving for fries and went to the resto just beside: Tender Bob’s.

Years back, I tried Tender Bob’s at Greenbelt (food court) and I was unimpressed, notwithstanding the swoons of my son who’d tried eating in its Libis branch. So I was never inclined to go back to Tender Bob’s regardless of location. But yesterday was different. I was hungry and there was a table available.

We initially ordered the cheesy garlic fries and I almost wanted to whisper, “please hurry”. We were famished. AFter placing the said order, son ordered chicken tenders, husband ordered the salmon with tomato salsa and I ordered the most sinful of all: three cheese burger, the three cheeses being cheddar, Swiss, and mozzarella. As expected the fries came first. Not bad with bacon bits but not as good as Bubba Gump’s. Then my son’s chicken tenders came. It had fries. He asked if the fries could be replaced with rice. The server asked the manager who smilingly agreed. then my burger came. It had fries. I had asked earlier that it be replaced with onion rings. Apparently the girl forgot. She returned to the kitchen with it. Meanwhile, my husband’s salmon came. It was very good. I didn’t try my son’s chicken tenders but he said the sour cream was very good. The chicken he said wasn’t very tender. How ironic given its name. Finally my burger came. The girl had said she’d recommend it cooked medium well. I took her advice and indeed it was very good. Brown outside, red inside but no blood was flowing. And the cheeses: yummy. The burger bun was served with the top askance. I didn’t eat the top bun, therefore, or at least not all of it. The onion rings were all right.

So do we go back to Tender Bob’sdsc01715? Certainly even if the lady server didn’t have a winning smile. At least the manager did. Some pictures:

The Barn and Burgoo

In Uncategorized on December 28, 2008 at 1:04 am

While we were waiting for food to be served at Burgoo the other day, my son reminisced, “That’s why I liked The Barn before. Like Burgoo I can draw while waiting.” Why?

In lieu of tablecloths, these restos’ tables are lined with paper atop which is a receptacle with crayons so one can doodle, sketch, etc. while waiting for the food to be served. My son did this in Burgoo the other day:

He noticed how servers tend to hesitate to put anything on top of his drawings each time. I sense some respect for the artist in that hesitation. But in the end, the servers do not have any choice.

Pepper Lunch in Shang

In Uncategorized on December 28, 2008 at 12:09 am

Was at Pepper Lunch in Shang yesterday. My husband, son and I invited three friends, one of them a priest, his sister and a friend who was over for Christmas but leaving last night for Davao. I called PL to reserve a table because as usual, we were running late and I didn’t want the priest and his sister to stand while waiting for us. They accommodated my request and my friend texted to assure me they were seated while waiting for us. We were a good 15 minutes late.

Our friend from Davao is a rather finicky eater. She avoids pork but likes Japanese restos, hence our choice of PL. I thought tuna or salmon or chicken would be all right for her, but what do you know? She said she wouldn’t have any of the dishes but for the miso soup and the sesame chicken salad. Our other friend was teasing her, “sige na, kumain ka kasi biro mo, nauna ka pang kumain dito kaysa sa iba sa pamilya mo? Pag-uwi mo sa Davao, at least masabi mong nakakain ka na sa PL.” She did promise to share the burger-chicken combo of our other friend. And she enjoyed her meal. She was particularly enamored with the chicken salad. The priest and I ordered the teriyaki chicken which was really good, husband ordered beef pepper rice, and son beef curry.  While we were relaxing after a filling meal, our priest friend saw a fellow priest from the same religious order (SJ) and they talked a bit. The friend who had been to PL in Power Plant said, “mas malaki dito no?” We were a happy bunch yesterday except that Davao friend had to leave at 2 as she had a flight to catch.

As we left the place, the servers and cashiers bade us thank you with happy smiles. Oh yes, the male server at our table mixed my teriyaki chicken for me. He sliced them and cooked them while I watched like a senorita. Our priest friend was asking “what do I do next?” as he watched what the male server was doing. The advice: cook the chicken before adding the sauce lest the sauce burn.

Power Plant doings

In Philippine Showbiz/TV on December 27, 2008 at 2:14 am

R3 has a new addition: Royce chocolates store. It looks like an ice cream stall at first glance because one sees counters like one would see in Pazzo, Haagen Daz, etc. displaying various flavors of ice cream. But at PreviewRoyce, it’s chocolates galore. So far I like the Potechi Crunch chocolate best – described as “an extended take on chocolate, chips and flakes. Potechi is crushed corn flakes and potato chips coated with our premium milke chocolate. Heavenly!” My son swoons over the caramel milk and creamy white chocolates sold in combination in one box, while my husband likes the mild bitter and extra bitter chocolates again sold in combination in one box.dsc016701 Yesterday we bought a box of the baton (cookies coated in chocolate) because we tasted it and liked it, but somehow when I ate an entire portion, I found the chocolate too bitter. With cookies, it’s still Yoku Mokudsc01723 that’s tops for me. Will YM ever open a branch in the Philippines? I wish… but not to purchase from on a regular basis. Only for occasional treats.

had an early dinner at Burgoo yesterday. Husband ordered Shrimp Caesar supreme salad (regular), son ordered cheese burger, I order the rice dish (class N’Orleans thing) which is like paella but drier, had sausages, chicken strips, mushrooms, green and red bell pepper. It lacked flavor somehow. Cafe Provencal’s is better and of course no one can beat Terrie’s chistorrado. No comparison. Some pictures:dsc01709

Our server must have been new on the job because when my son ordered his burger, she didn’t ask if he wanted them flavored. When my son got his order, he saw one of the servers he recognized from past visits and requested that the fries be flavored. But to her credit, our server was quick to replensih the bottomless soda of my husband.

A word of advice. When you eat at restos like Burgoo, do ask if they have privileges attached to credit cards. I did and we were given appetizers – nachos which we took out because we were too full by the time we checked. I think some credit cards have desserts attached to them.

After dinner, we went around a bit, bought the January issue of Yes magazine which has pictures galore of Willie Revillames properties (houses, cars, yachts). Very tastefully designed. Bought the issue out of curiosity notwithstanding… never mind.

Then we watched one of the MMFF movies. The choice I have to rationalize. My son is so into music and when he learned it was Mike Alba of Yosha who did the musical score, he asked if we could watch it. Yes, we watched Iskul Bukol 2. Calm down. Sure, I watch Eat Bulaga, but the last movie I watched of the triumvirate (T, V and J) was Working Boys. That time I realized that all the funny parts in the trailer were the funniest of the lot so not necessary to watch the movie. Okay, so where do I begin?

First off, when husband got the tickets at around 5 for the 8 pm screening, he noted that only the front-most seats in the seat plan for the 5 pm showing had not been bought. There were a lot more seats available for the 8 pm screening. But lo and behold, when we went to the theater at close to 8, we had to line up and the queue was long. First time this happened to us at Power Plant. Usually, when we’d line up to enter the theater, there would be 3 people before us, but this time, the line was really long. When we entered the theater, it wasn’t yet full but slowly, people came in and filled up the theater. People whose ages ranged from the very young to our age – 50s.  Apparently, people who watched Iskul Bukol on TV when the likes of Joey Albert were part of it. Guest appearances were made by Bibeth Orteza, Sharon Cuneta, Kay Torres, Redford White, Tonet Macho. I missed Mang Tem-i but they had a female substitute for her. I also wish Bibeth had longer exposure. She spoke in Ilonggo mostly.

The movie itself: it was Vic Sotto’s throughout doing a Harrison Ford. I think he should cut down on the side comments bit where he’d speak in asides to the audience for a pa cute effect. Doesn’t really work with me. The sons of TVJ were  charming: Gian Sotto is very good looking and confident, Oyo is cute and Keempee is Keempee. The girls: Gian’s partner I couldn’t recognize, Oyo had Krista Ranilla and Keempee, Pauleen Luna. They should have been made to do more. But then again, it was Vic’s movie. Jose was funny but wasn’t that much used, Wally even less. Jong del Rosario of Street Boys – this man has a lot of passion, whether he dances or acts. I miss his appearances on 7. He’s very intense and no matter that his role in IB2 was brief, he made an impact. Who was his wife? She was pretty. Their son, the boy I wasn’t sure was a boy in Dyesebel because of his taras bulba hairstyle, was perky as usual. It was funny how he’d bend and fart each time.  Tito Sotto, each time he was onscreen trying to be funny, I’d think of his being a senator and somehow that was a bit jolting. Joey was Joey – the source of green-ness with pause. Carleen Aguilar – the way she made goo-goo eyes at Vic, no wonder she was able to attract Dennis Trillo. Very convincing. Bianca King was underused as well. I thought the role was too old for her. Overall assessment – entertaining naman. Jimmy Santos was there, so with Richie d’horsie. That’s what I have noticed about TVJ – they take care of their friends. Like they posted bail for RDH. Is he back in jail now? They used him very sparingly but they did that because they said it wouldn’t be complete without him. Methinks they can easily have him out of jail for good but want him to learn a lesson.

Oh yes, and the musical scoring was different from that of the usual Filipino movies. Some very interesting pieces there.

Christmas Presents

In Uncategorized on December 25, 2008 at 3:20 am

Just spoke to a best friend a few minutes ago and we were talking about Christmas presents. She gave me all sorts of different chocolates never before seen by my family and myself: sugar free for my husband, white for my son, and milk chocolate for myself. I can’t recall exactly how many different kinds she gave but it will be months before we need (yes, chocolate is a need) to buy any.

A popular present for my husband this year was mugs of different shapes and sizes, materials and color. Mug, after mug, after mug. The family got a basket with 3 personalized mugs. This was accompanied by packets of coffee with chocolate sachets and packs of food for the gods wrapped in foil. Very nice. If I had taken a picture, then you’d have known who we are. So no picture. For that matter, I haven’t taken pictures of the presents the family got. hahaha. Except for this one from Rustan’s supermarket because of the Sapphire card membership. yesterday, I had the maid go to Rustan’s for some last-minute ingredients. She showed me this from afar. dsc01694 (to be continued. off to lunch with my sisters)

I thought it was queso de bola but Maid C said it was too light. I removed the cellophane and saw that it was special flavored polvoron. Tried the chocolate flavored one, just a bite and then decided… never mind. My mistaking the gift for queso de bola brought me back to a few years ago when I wrapped one suha in red cellophane with no intention to mislead. Sent it to the new accounts person of RCBC in Katipunan. She texted “thank you for the queso de bola. ” I was so embarrassed.

More tomorrow. I can hardly keep my eyes open.

Here I am again. Among the interesting presents I received were two pashminas (one each from 2 of my fashionable friends) while my husband received a shemagh – the fringed scarf worn by some TV reporters when they go to Muslim territory. One of these days I will upload pictures.

Koreanovelas

In Korea telenovelas on December 24, 2008 at 8:30 am

Finished watching Rosemary a few days ago. Wow, I cried. Heart-wrenchingly beautiful. Tender. The male lead is always so convincing whatever his role. First saw him in Hotelier and now here in Rosemary. And while the English text in the cover is lousy, not so the subtitles. Galing. It can be emotionally draining but it is also edifying. It lingers.

Started 18 vs 29 weeks back, I found it corny so haven’t finished it. Started Single Again. I was thrilled that the PHilippines was mentioned, and in fact a number of scenes were shot in Mactan but the story is so blah, so far. A few weeks ago I also watched a Korea telenovela where the Philippines was mentioned. They love us?

So many dvds to watch pa. Will keep you posted.

Trinoma on a Sunday, a Christmas Sunday …

In Shopping on December 24, 2008 at 8:14 am

is nearly a suicidal decision. It’s a toxic experience at the very least. (or are toxic and suicidal equivalent conditions?) People here, there and everywhere. Noise levels of the highest decibels. Awful. And finding one’s way is messy. Plus the people around who work in the mall are as clueless. One is lucky if the person one asks knows the correct answer. Sometimes they give answers but these aren’t necessarily correct. Like Glorietta, Trinoma is labyrinthine (my husband’s thought), maze-like (my more simple mind thinks, oh okay, my less expansive vocabulary pronounces). So if this post on Trinoma is as convoluted, you know why. I still have a Trinoma hangover.

First stop was Fix. Which luckily was by the door of the floor we stopped at. What floor? Who knows? The parking level floor number and the mall number don’t coincide. That kind of confusion is something my 52-year old mind doesn’t care to understand or memorize any longer. Back to Fix. There weren’t too many people yet so I told my son to ask for an appointment that afternoon with Jojo. Our first priority was lunch. But when son asked about Jojo, lady said he was on the upper floor. When son told me that, I wanted to ask “couldn’t they reach him from this floor?” But I was out of steam, hungry and all that at past 1 pm after the 10:30 mass. So I kept my peace.

Luckily lunch was a happy experience. We had it at Bubba Gump. What floor? Ask the guard or someone. I have no energy to remember. It’s outside the mall, in the periphery. Okay, Trinoma is like Greenbelt where there are stores/restos one enters from outside so one inhales whatever air is available–fresh, polluted. Getting to BG was an ordeal for me because I’m in a wheelchair. Ground has various sizes of stones/rocks lining the way (not Ilocos’ cobbled stone roads, bigger. Slate sheets?). So travel is bumpy. This reminded me of Promenade in Greenhills. I console myself – a friend said shaking like that makes one lose some pounds. Haha.

BG was near full. Orders were very satisfying in terms of taste and quantity. We had the fries that had this very special cheese sauce, my son and husband ordered fish dishes, I ordered a prawn with crab meat thing. Really good. And this binging entitled us to free dessert. Flourless choco cake with raspberry sauce and Big Scoop vanilla ice cream served in a mug. Yummy. Some pictures:dsc01674

Energized, we proceeded to Gourdo’s. I needed some paper cupcakes thingy. I remembered being in Gourdo’s months back. So we took the elevator to the lobby. Except that it was the wrong elevator. Yes, it brought us to the lobby but not to the lobby where Gourdo’s is. I woefully asked the guard if there was any way we could get to the other lobby without going up the elevator again. He said no. We had to take the elevator in the Mindanao wing. Where’s that? Near National, he said. NAtional on the ground floor where there are throngs of people. Darn. But we survived and found Gourdo’s  where I can live forever. Exag, yes, but the cooking and baking stuff they have is mecca. Got a few paper cupcakes thingies at 20% off because they had Christmas motif and it’s almost Christmas, so I guess, they don’t think this will be bought pa. Saw this set of white mixing bowls with yellow legs and told my husband I wanted those for Christmas. he promptly bought them. Gourdo’s has a hodge podge of things I like: candies, sauces, syrups, chocolates for baking, baking dishes, Wilton stuff, etc. hayyyyy.

Can’t recall much where else we went in Trinoma consecutively. Oh yes, we checked out the theaters. Hahaha, typical Ayala development. They don’t want the disabled in their theaters. Sure, it’s flat going in, but the first row of seats can be accessed by going up a step. Sure the disabled can stay on the level below the first row but he’d be alone. The ground is separated from the first row by this wall. Or maybe the disabled’s companion can bring a seat? Whatever. Certainly, I won’t watch a movie there. Not after we did in Greenbelt and it was so uncomfortable watching from the front row. At least there I wasn’t a wall apart from my son and husband.

Trinoma is huge. It has many malls in it: MOA, Shang, Podium, Power Plant, Serendra (does that qualify as a mall?) in terms of stores in these malls and the stalls in Trinoma. I think it’s bigger than MOA? Not sure though. I told my husband one has to go to Trionoma at the rate of one floor per day. Oh yess, we went to one of the floors of Landmark and I swooned at the number of choices but not at the number of people. Too many.

We did enjoy going to Olympic Village which sells Tshirts, shoes and sandals because the place is huge and offers many choices. There were many people but not enough to turn us off.

I nearly forgot. After Gourdo’s we went to Fully Booked (we also went to Bread Talk but the white choco croissant was not available so we left). FB in Trinoma is so different from FB in Serendra and Power Plant. The personnel aren’t as well trained. Consider this. There were two of them behind the cash register. We were directly in front of them and they didn’t even ask what we were about. They were busy doing I don’t know what. Yes, possibly the accounts but hey, there were customers wanting their ear. At one point, one customer asked “Do you have a paperbound edition?” The girl said “wala”. So what’s the big deal? The asker and the answerer were similarly distracted. What do I mean? the asker was holding a paperback. Go figure.

While we were in Trinoma, texted a cousin who frequents the place (once a week actually because of proximity to a relative’s residence) who said “how’s the crowd on a Sunday?” His text sounded almost like a “Good luck.” Then at FB, we met an acquaintance who confessed, “Nalilito ako rito sa Trinoma.” See, we weren’t alone…..

Pepper Lunch

In Restaurants on December 24, 2008 at 7:38 am

Last Friday or Saturday, on a whim, husband and I went to Power Plant for no specific reason. As we were nearing the mall, he suddenly remembered that my best friend who had called Monday to ask if I was free (I was tutoring, she had flown in from Europe) might be in her condo in Joya. On the offchance that she was, I called and asked if she could come and join us at Power Plant. She said “Why not come up here?” I asked what food she wanted and she said, nothing. I have ice cream here. Hmmm, I like ice cream but not on an empty stomach. So we decided to get beef pepper rice (takeout) from Pepper Lunch and 3 orders of tuna shake salad. Soft drinks we bought from the supermarket as I thought it might be difficult to carry drinks in cups as we’d have to wheel from Power Plant to Joya. We enjoyed the conversation and the nice unit she had, still a work in progress in terms of furnishings but with enough nice plates, a dining set, etc. While I insisted we eat off the bowls she insisted on eating off her beautiful plates. She said she didn’t mind having to wash the dishes. Some pictures of the view from her condo:dsc01652dsc01653dsc01654dsc01656

Monday, we had time in our hands and I asked husband if he wanted to go out. He wanted to watch “The Day the Earth Stood Still” and so it was Power Plant for us yet again. In the car, I asked where he wanted to eat. Can you guess? Okay, do I have to spell it out? Pepper Lunch. He had chicken pepper rice (double), I had beef pepper rice and we shared one order of kani salad. He realized later that I had said one each, but never mind. That gave me a chance to gain fewer pounds/inches/calories. There were many people so the noise level was crazy but the food was great as usual. One of the waiters smiled at us so I asked if PL at Shang had opened. He said yes, on the 19th as scheduled. Noted.

Yesterday, Tuesday, while husband went off to a wedding, son and I went to Podium for a haircut at FIX. I can’t recall now if I blogged about going there one weekend only to find a long queue, Jojo no longer around to boot. Then we went to Trinoma last Sunday (this one will be blogged about next if I still have the energy) in search of Jojo, failed to find him, hence the trip to Podium yesterday, regardless of the stylist. My son said nevermore to Trinoma. But more on that later. Kulit ba?

After the haircut, went off to Mobile 1 to get an IPOD dock for husband, saw that they had fewer items than before (Look, Ma, no more PHilips docking systems) and decided to go to Shang. Asked son where he wanted to eat. Are you ready for his answer? Pepper Lunch. Hmm, thrice in quick succession for me, this was getting embarrassing, I thought. I quickly thought of what I should order and decided to get the kani salad. Then it occurred to me when we got there I also wanted some meat: chicken teriyaki or cut beef? The latter, while son ordered his favorite: beef curry pepper rice.

As we entered, I saw Jeroen von Straten, owner and chef. I also saw Mylene, the lady in blue from Pepper Lunch in Power Plant who readily welcomed us. As we began to eat, Jeroen stopped at our table and said hi and then some. He checked what we had and saw that the sodas had covers but no straws. He promptly got two straws for us. He also gave my son a bottle of spice for his curry. The spice had a lemony flavor, he said.  He entertained us like a truly good host, and when Cecile came in, we were promptly introduced. He also showed my son around and wow, I thought, my son is so lucky to have met and listened to Jeroen. (Funny because in the evening, my husband was telling my son that maybe he could share that experience with his classmates in school. He said “but they’re secret!” He did text his friends to go to Pepper Lunch in Shang even as we were eating.)

Pepper Lunch in Shang is more spacious than PL in Power Plant. It’s cooler too. Plus you might just meet the chef and his lovely wife, Cecile.

Another plus for Pepper Lunch in Shang at least where my son is concerned is that close by is Lyric, which sells musical instruments and things musical. It will be a while before we’ll be able to eat in Cyma, Cafe Provencal, etc. in Shang, I’m sure. Bet? See, the precedent has been set. Ever since we tried out PL in Power Plant, we can count in one hand how often we’ve been to the other restos in Power Plant. But I’m not complaining.

The Selecta Ice Cream Commercials, the Purefoods Hotdog Commercial

In Philippine TV personalities on December 18, 2008 at 3:09 pm

I have blogged about these some posts ago but each time I see said commercial, whether with Cassandra or Maverick as bida, I can only smile. Carmina assumes a role minor to her kids and Zoren but that she doesn’t mind and is enjoying the whole thing is palpable, apparent, disarming, charming. The twins are naturals too. And Zoren doesn’t seem like he’s acting. Good job everyone.

I also like the commercial of the family of Gelli and Ariel. Hotdogs. Purefoods hotdogs. With the two Rivera sons. How nice to see happy and complete showbiz families, possible if the parties involved set their priorities and live by these. It is possible. (oops, Swift hotdog commercial. See correciton below from Ms. Malat. Thanks!)

DOH Secretary Francisco Duque

In Government service on December 18, 2008 at 3:03 pm

Hats off to you, sir.

Tonight in The Sweet Life, DOH Secretary Duque was a guest. Topic was malnutrition. Lucy said something to the effect that she hoped the project addressing malnutrition would be effective  by 2010. Duque said something “and beyond. The system has been institutionalized. etc.”

I don’t think he meant that his term would necessarily be extended. I think the point he was making was that the program should work regardless of who the DOH secretary is because precisely, it has been institutionalized. Galing. Apparently he is not attached to the position and the power attendant to it. Apparently he is sincere about instituting reforms for the good of the Filipino people.  Isn’t it great that we have people in government who come up with programs that they expect will go on even without them because these are worthwhile? Hopefully whoever succeeds Duque will not think that just because he didn’t create Duque’s programs they should be done away with for the sake of putting in something with the successor’s imprint. A lot of the time people who assume power forget the saying “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”

Way to go, Secretary Duque.

QTV on a Wednesday night

In Uncategorized on December 17, 2008 at 11:45 am

The night is young so I’m not too sure I’ll watch all the shows in QTV tonight like I did some months ago. For example, I started watching The Sweet Life when Robert Alejandro and Jetro Rafael were being interviewed. Marvin Agustin and RA could pass for brothers, don’t you think?

The topic they discussed was backpacking and fortunately, they devoted a good amount of time on it, in fact showing  the audience what the backpack contained etc. Pictures of their Asian trip were also shown. Lovely scenes. According to the two men for a 3-month trip they spent only P50k. RA said the highlight of his trip was made up of the people he met, the friends he made. Nice insight there. JR did most of the talking and he was a good guest. Lucy didn’t know RA’s family owns Papemelroti.

Quickfire had Tuesday Vargas as guest. WOw, I’m sure Rosebud enjoyed having TV around because she really helped out in the food preparation. Apparently, TV is used to doing things in the kitchen and it showed. I’ve long admired TV as a sensible comedienne and her guest appearance in Quickfire increased my admiration for her. And a long shot of the ladies showed both of them sitting down like real ladies. Great.

Living It Up is showing now. The Lighthouse Hotel in Subic looks interesting. Months back I actually made a few calls to the place, wondering if it was worth going to. The feature has made me think it   will be.

Issa Litton’s eye makeup is too dark. Maybe they should lighten it a little next time?

Rosemary

In Uncategorized on December 17, 2008 at 5:41 am

A friend gave me 7 Koreanovelas. I started Beethoven Virus but the subtitles weren’t so well written I decided to try out Rosemary. Engish is okay plus two of the male actors were favorites of mine in Hotelier and one other I can’t remember.

Series starts happily enough. A happily married couple. Interestingly, the guy is a games developer. Thing is he was asked to go in search of this young lady for hiring and after several meetings gets her to agree to work with the company. By themselves they spend an entire day singing the theme of anime from the 70s in the bleachers section of an empty ball field. Then the girl said she wanted to celebrate, would he join her? HE agrees. Together the whole day and out drinking till 2 a.m. When he gets home, sweet wife is all smiles and even guesses he was with a woman. Then he doses off and she dutifully removes his socks and covers him with a comforter.

I stopped watching at that point. Is the telenovela an accurate mirroring of married couples? they don’t bother to listen to each other and here comes an ingenue and he’s all ears with her. Hmm. From the looks of it the wife will die …

And I’m not even done with Episode 2.

Update on my son’s birth certificate

In Uncategorized on December 16, 2008 at 1:19 pm

Yippeeeeee. I finally have my son’s corrected birth certificate. Corrections are typed along the side of his old birth certificate. It indicates the change in his parents’ date of marriage from Decmeber 8, 1989 to December 8, 1988. It also   states that one of the letters in his middle name is not C but K.

Wow, if it weren’t so weird I’d frame this birth certificate. I just can’t believe it’s finally done.

Still waiting for my own corrected one, though, And my SSS card. Hurray for NSO and the Civil Registrar of Manila.

Saw President Bush avoid a pair of shoes singly hurled at him and suddenly recalled a game I used to play. Click on this link to see what I mean. For a while there I thought, wow, no respect for the man’s office (metonymy?), not Bush per se. Then it also occurred to me to ponder, “but where is the man coming from?” Did he know several who were victims of the war which America purportedly initiated? Hardly being a political animal, I don’t know the answer to that, so I give both parties the benefit of the doubt. ..

Was watching Unang Hirit more intently than I’ve been watching TV the past weeks. I didn’t have anything cerebral to do today so I took the time to read some days’ old newspapers, watch TV, etc. Then I received a call from the mom of a friend and from my sister and my nephew. A few orders for cakes but luckily Unang Hirit was done. I did catch DTI Usec Zenaida Maglaya in conversation with Arnold Clavio about prices of prime commodities this season and I must say this lady knows whereof she speaks, she is very competent and apparently dedicated to her work. yahoo. She gives me reason to rejoce that there are people in government who are actually doing her homework and yet sound very affable rather than stern or snooty. ZM for President? I’m sure she can hack it.

It’s Chef Tristan Encarnacion’s birthday so they had Rosebud and Michi Dizon (?) cook him bibingka. A chef having two chefs cook bibingka for him. How unfair for us lesser mortals, how lucky Tristan is. Happy Birthday. Each time I see TE, I always remember his dad Jun Encarnacion and am sure he is very proud and happy at the way his son has turned out.

Winnie Monsod spoke of Simbang Gabi and when Suzie mentioned that she hasn’t been to one for the longest time because of conflics in schedule, WM, like a real mother, chided SE and said you have no excuse not to attend. Oops, like SE, I am guilty. Tonight should be a second chance but so far, there are circumstances that hinder my attendance. Tomorrow will be another such day. Thursday, more or less, is a sure thing. Sad. In the past I used to be able to go to most.  Oh well.

What a day … part 2

In Uncategorized on December 14, 2008 at 11:46 pm

Fix on a Sunday. Eager to have a haircut along with son, we hied off to Fix after Florabel’s. The couch had several souls waiting. I was almost sure we wouldn’t get our haircuts and after our lunch at Florabel’s. I wasn’t too optimistic about what the day had in store for us. True enough, the ladies who were gracious the first time I was at Fix, weren’t as welcoming. Did they have amnesia? Or maybe they weren’t the same ladies who had welcomed us a month or so back. Because they weren’t at all hospitable. And they said “wala hong gagawa sa inyo. Haircut ba?” ANd my son’s favorite Jojo was no longer there, we were told. I thought that meant he was out of Fix for good but no, he’d just transferred to Trinoma. Okay. But my son wanted his haircut, they said “5 o’clock pa po.” It was two pm then. son said to me, “After Christmas na lang, sa Trinoma.” I didn’t look for Mr. Bam na. The ladies were so blah.  There was a hair stylist (or at least I think he was) who smiled at us. But when one encounters sour faces, never mind. There was one lady at the counter though who smiled and gave me a card with Jojo’s number at Trinoma. And she said yes when I asked if they accepted appointments.

We went to Living Well. So many people there. We went to Adidas 3rd floor and I forget where else. So many people in Podium and I wasn’t at ease. Oh yes, we did go to Adidas’ sale outlet on the second floor where son initially found two shirts at 50% off but gave them up when he saw a nice pair of shoes also at 50% off. First pair he saw didn’t fit. He saw another pair and they fit. Great. He kept hinting about the New Minstrels show at 4, but I felt I had enough of Podium, a crowded pre-Christmas Podium. Because I needed to get my replacement blouse from Shang, I suggested he stay in Podium while we went to Shang to get my blouse. He smilingly said yes. We went off to Shang. Initially we were told by the chief of security (he looked it at least) that the parking building nearest Edsa was full. Husband pointed to the disabled sign at the windshield. Guard let us through. As we went in, we were asked to pay parking fee. Shang’s parking rules forever change – sometimes they let you pay before going in, sometimes after. So we paid. As we went up, I counted 7 cars going down at intervals. So I was sure we’d find a slot and we did. at 4a.

First stop: the raison d’etre we had to go to Shang. Marks and Spencer. at the counter where one pays, where one also gets replacements were two Chinese ladies hogging the counter so poor seated me couldn’t catch the attention of the clerk, any clerk. Then I finally did. Janice. She said “sandali lang ha.” Reminded me of the maid at home, Maid C, whose attention is always not complete. She got my blouse and kept saying “sandali lang ha.” Opened the cabinet of replacement blouses and closed the cabinet and said “sandali…” etc. This routine went on for several minutes punctuated by “kailan niyo ho pina replace to? Sino ang kausap niyo? May nag text na ba sa inyo? Andun si Jo may inaasikaso po. San…” You get the drift. I said “bakit wala ba diyan?” She said “wala ho eh.” I insisted, “may nakausap ako kahapon, nandito na raw.” I was getting nowhere with her because she was just fretting without focusing. Then I saw Dang. I asked, “ikaw na nga mag-asikaso. Nandyan na ba ang blouse ko?” She asked my name, gave my family name. And guess what? She said my first name. Brilliant lady. She said “andito na.” without even opening the cabinet. Hay salamat. So there. I got my blouse but only after some waiting time again. In the meantime, i saw a poster on the side which mentioned loyalty awards. This was what had been preoccupying the two Chinese ladies who were filling up forms. I thought of gettting one myself, being such an avid fan of Marks and Spencer ( I can no longer fit in Big and Small blouses. Got 4 recently, only 1 fit). Card costs P300. Every P100 purchase entitles one to a P1 rebate that accumulates in an e-purse. Once the e-purse reaches P300, you can use it. Looked attractive. And like a silly fool, I got one. Later at home in the evening, I mulled over my decision. hohoho. To get back my P300 I should first spend P30,000 worth at MArks and Spencer. Omigosh. How long do I take to recover that? Baka mag-expire na ang card, di ko pa bawi ang P300. eng, eng, eng.

But at least while we were there, son was texting and glowingly told us re how good New Minstrels was at Podium. At least there was one happy soul. While waiting for his call to get him, we went to Debenhams. Very nice clerk (pity I didn’t get his name) who helped me choose hand towels and even wheeled me to the cashier because husband went to the washroom. As we left Debenhams son texted New Minstrels show was over. 5:30 pm by then. So we proceeded to the elevator. WHile waiting for one, husband looked down at the atrium. He said “di ba The Company yan? Estudyante mo o.” Yes, one of the band’s members was my student. I was 23 and she was maybe 16 or 17. Earlier, we’d heard and seen the orchestra rehearsing but The Company was there too? I promptly called my son if he wanted to watch the Company and happily, he said yes. And happily, husband was agreeable to picking up son at Podium while I stayed behind at Shang. We(husband and I) both entered the elevator which was on its way up. I asked the elevator girl to promise to help me out of the elevator after my husband left (he went off at Level 5) and she smilingly said yes. So at Level 2, I left the elevator without any problems and smiled at the elevator girl. I wheeled myself easily to the venue, beyond the elastic thingies that separated the seats to the show and the standing crowd. I thought no one would ever block my view but somehow, a man did as someone stood beside him. Darn. Some people can be so inconsiderate. I’ll  have breakfast first before moving on to Part 3.

What a day… part 1 – Florabel at Podium

In Uncategorized on December 14, 2008 at 11:20 pm

After mass at Gesu yesterday, we hied off to Podium. Son wanted to have a haircut at Fix. As we mulled over where to have lunch, it occurred to me to try out Florabel. Some time back, we had gone in the resto (son remembered this) but left after no one seemed to mind we were there… no one asked us to sit or anything. And I think the owner herself was there but was talking to someone. So we left. But I’ve been reading about the resto so I thought we should try it.

Asked son to go up ahead as we looked for parking. Parking at Podium yesterday was a hassle. We were at B2 no slot left, B3, the same. There were two slots but the lady guard said those slots were for delivery vans. We proceeded to B4 as she suggested, still no slots and those for delivery vans were occupied by cars. So we went back to B3 and God blessed us with a slot. I told the lady guard about it and she said “malayo ba ang naparkan niyo? lipat niyo na lang dito.” I said “di bale na lang”. I should have sung that ala Gary V. Oh well. I should have said that with one eyebrow raised no? Like Celia Rodriguez or Dina B. Because whatever for? Duh.

Florabel’sdsc01634. Son was finishing his soup when we arrived and eating bread. Okay, that should tell you how long we took to park. Because service at Florabel’s is slow. Very disappointing. When we were about to enter, there were these two ladies outside the resto, menus in hand. But one of them was watering some potted plants. Husband had to call out to her “miss” to hold the door open because I’m in a wheelchair and my husband has two hands only. She didn’t move quickly enough or maybe the sensitive waiter inside was quicker, so it was he who held the door open. Great. We joined our son. He was into the last teaspoonful of soup. After we were in place, no one came although only one other table had guests and there were maybe 3 or more waiters around. Then I called out, “waiter.” He looked at me. I said “menu please.” Kulang sa adrenaline? Di pa nag almusal ang mga waiter? It was 12:30. So he handed me a menu. As we went over it, he laid a round dish with something in itdsc01635. I asked “ano yan?” Because we hadn’t ordered yet. Nothing. And he said “ay special sauce yan para sa bread.” The special sauce had no name. And no bread with it. I said “ano ang ingredients?” He said “mga herbs at spices.” No  product knowledge? Kulang sa training (by now you know we aren’t going back there. baka magalit sila after this post comes out). Then after some time, we were each given one dinner roll. Gusto niyo butter? we said yes, we were each given a rosette of butterdsc01636. Great. we ordered: son had ordered panini with chicken, husband ordered pasta with chorizo and prawns, i asked if I could order from the kiddie menu and he said ok, so I asked which was good, he recommended the burger steak. Okay, so we placed our orders.  I also asked what soup was good (nainggit sa anak – he had ordered mushroom soup). The waiter said the pumpkin soupdsc01637 with glazed chestnuts was good, so being rather docile or maybe hungry, I said yes to that. I like chestnuts and could consume a kilo in a day. But for the constipation problem afterwards, I would do that but so far, I’ve only gone up to a fourth of a kilo. Anyway, mark the order at which we placed our orders ha: son’s panini maybe 20 minutes before the rest. Okay, the orders came in trickles. First my pumpkin soup. It had croutons, so where oh where were my beloved chestnuts? Nowhere? Oops there was one – maybe 1/4 of an entire chestnut, floating woefully around. I decided I’d eat it last – save the best for last. The pumpkin soup was good. really good. except that I’d have been happier if there were more chestnuts. SIge lang, ti-is. Then my husband’s pasta came. Wow, impressive. The meats were everywhere, one didn’t have to search or scrounge around for chorizo and prawnsdsc01640. Very evident. And wow, bacon too. Very good. Then my burger steak camedsc01639. Texture was very good. No apparent extenders. Nicely arranged. With brocolli, cauliflower and two asparagus spears on the side with some butter sauce. But here’s when the sad parts started to set in some more. The gravy was very inadequate in terms of quantity. The steak could have stood more of it because the steak didn’t have much flavor. Son started getting impatient. No panini yet. He asked the waiter who said it was coming. Then it did, with a small container of fries. ANd veggies inside and outside the sandwichdsc01638. At first son gave it the thumbs up. But later in the evening he said “sabi sa menu, spicy ang chicken pero walang ka pepper pepper.” I guess son was being kind by not complaining during lunch. Oh well, that’s Florabel’s for the family. That’s it na. No second visit. Or rather, no third visit from us. Sad. Should we try Felix? It also has Florabel as part owner aside from Richard and Lucy. But it’s in faraway Greenbelt.

Shuin Smoked Chicken and Sango burger

In Food, Grocery shopping on December 11, 2008 at 8:55 pm

Weeks back, a cousin-in-law who knows I don’t get to go around as much as she gave me the menu of Sango and said we might want to try the place out. She said her family enjoyed the master burger with cheese very much. So one lazy Saturday, husband agreed to get the burgers at the place’s Pearl Drive branch and wow, they were very good. Not at all dry, in fact the opposite. Very saucy, very Japanese tasting, bordering on sweet. The taste lingers and till now I’ve been longing to have another go at it. We ordered the master fries too and it had a meat sauce so it tasted very much like the burger. Maybe next time, regular fries would suffice. The resto has a branch in Mile Long in Makati as well

Yesterday as I was busily planning what to buy from Shoppersville in Katipunan, manna from heaven came in the form of smoked chicken from a friend. Shuin smoked chicken with outlets in Araneta Avenue and Cordillera Street in QC. Wanting to save the chicken for a meal with husband and son, I decided to postpone eating it (I eat alone at lunch) and had it for dinner. Really yummy: tender, juicy and plump. And the sweetish sauce complements the a tad salty chicken. I had to restrain myself from eating more than the butt, one wing and neck. I always have the boys have the  thigh and drumstick. How I wish chickens had three legs. OR two butts and two necks. Oh, I still have a wing left for lunch today. Son wasn’t able to eat his portion actually because he had a long test till past 9. Ordered pizza for him at Shakey’s. Comfort food after a long day in school. How his face brightened when I told him there was pizza for him. He wistfully said “Yellow Cab?” I said “ay no.” His next guess, “Shakey’s?” I said yes. Face lit up also. Two pizzas and mojos in fact. Didn’t get a free pizza because my pizzanatic card had expired. It now costs less than P200 unlike in the past when it cost almost P400.They had it on stock this time; weeks back they didn’t. If you get a card, the freebie doesn’t apply immediately. Card takes 4 hours to activate. But they’re willing to deliver just the card.

Re the groceries. Yesterday the mom of a friend who’s the grandmom of my son’s classmate, called to say she wanted to order 40 medium banana cakes and 3 chocolate cakes for this morning. Maid could have gotten it but it would take long and I didn’t have the luxury of time. Three tutees in the pm. I would have wanted to take up the Rustan ’s manager’s offer to just call for my grocering needs and they’d deliver but (1) their line was busy; (2) the chances were higher that Shoppersville would have the bigger bags of flour (at least 2 kilos rather than 800 grams in Rustan’s) and Queensland butter. So I called Shoppersville: 426 1246, then pressed 2. Reggie answered. I asked if they had Queensland. And flour in big bags. She said yes to both. I asked if I could have her prepare the rest of my grocery needs. She said yes. When I went down my list she said “ma’am hindi namin ito gawain na mag grocery para sa inyo”.  I said “kaibigan naman ako ni ______(name of owner)”. She said “oo, ma’am pero wala talaga kaming taga grocery ng kailangan ng customer”. But I needed the groceries quick so I acceded and said “sige, eto lang hindi na next time”.  Eight different items only. Or rather 9. She had them ready, true. But how sad that she said what she did. So opposite when you call the likes of Shakey’s, Pizza Hut and Yellow Cab, Jollibee, McDo which have operators asking “ano pa po?” Like they want you to buy all their products. Do I tell the owner of the store about this? Haha, but what if she sides with Reggie? Oh well… I guess that’s what sets Rustan’s apart most of the time: service. IF only their stocks matched the brand of service they usually offer. Oh well, grocery Utopia, or dreaming of one is quixotic. One either has the goods or the service. Never both?

Quickly – some food finds

In Food on December 10, 2008 at 11:42 am

Rebisco Super Thin crackers – they go well with spreads. Like tonight I ate a few crackers on which I spread the Sundried Tomato Cheese Spread of Bravo. Sarap. I think the super thin crackers are better than the thicker and older versions of crackers like Skyflakes, Fita and Sunflower because the Rebisco crackers are so thin you can actually taste and savor the spread.

Butterfly Shrimps of Cold Storage – a pack of 10 costs P130, I think. Rivals the Shrimp thingy of KFC. There’s a Cold Storage at Rustan’s Katipunan, back portion. Comes out cheaper although you’ll have to spend on some oil and gas. Sarap.

Bulldog barbecue sauces  and OK sauce – Bought them months back without a clear idea of where to use them. Then a few weeks back had some barbecued meat and tried putting them alternately on the meat. Very good. Got OK sauce in Unimart, while Bulldog is available in both Unimart and Rustan’s.

Marky Cielo in One Proud Mama

Heat at Edsa Shangrila Hotel, Cafe Provencal in Shang Mall, Pepper Lunch

In Hotel restaurants, Restaurants, Restaurants in Metro Manila on December 9, 2008 at 12:14 am

Last night we hied off to Heat, it being my husband’s and my 20th wedding anniversarypc103953. Heat’s buffet rivals that of Makati Shangrila’s Circle’s buffet. Or maybe it mattered that while we had the lunch buffet in Circles, it was dinner at Heat, so it was cooler and less stressful for us.

Prior to Edsa Shang we heard mass at Christ the King in Green Meadows. Very comfortable as the pews are aplenty and the church is air-conditioned. But a bit bothering in that people aren’t as gracious, very few bother to extend a hand to let anyone get ahead – whether in lines or in traffic. Oh well, maybe everyone was in a hurry? Saw Rhea Santos and husband receive communion. She is so pretty even without makeup or the barest of it. But she doesn’t smile. She had this defiant look. Oh well.

To Heat. The lobby of the hotel dsc016291exudes a certain scent everywhere. It assails the senses, bordering on overpowering. Perhaps they should diminish it a little. But the food in Heat and the service make one forget the annoying scent. Choices are seemingly limitless. The quality of the cheeses, breads and cold cuts – excellent. My son liked the soup one determines the ingredients to: he chose laksa, noodles, chicken and beef and it was spicy but not too, he said. Opens the nostrils so any clogged ones get relief, he said. Almost like tom yum, he declared, in terms of taste. It was his clear favorite last night. Me I liked the cheeses and cold cuts and the bread. Oh yes, my son liked the Elle Vive butter. Unsalted but great, he said. Husband was quietly enjoying whatever he got. Maybe it’s a case of diminishing marginal utility to consume because the swooning dwindled somehow.

Japanese stuff – sushis and sashimis. I still think it’s Kimpura that serves them best, hands down. I ate the siopao, not exceptional. Dumplings too. I tried roast beef from my son’s plate: the taste was superb but the meat was a tad tough. I think it was not sliced against the grain which chefs say assure more tender beef. Oh yes there was lechon. It was some two hours after the buffet began but the skin was crispy and fresh. Great. I had the seafood chowder but tasted no seafood. It was cornstarchy-creamy, not bad tasting. The puff pastry/crust on top was delicious. But I didn’t taste any seafood, just a tiny mushroom. there was curacha but it was difficult to get the flesh. Okay, I’m no expert in eating crabs. Other choices were tempura: shrimp and veggies, but I was so stuffed I didn’t bother. Oh and there was Peking duck with hoisin sauced wrapped along with green onions. Yummy. Son like the pizza very much (better than makati shang’s circles, he claimed, and the sole. There was something about the chicken from the Western section that he didn’t like, he said)

Desserts were aplenty: white chocolate and milk chocolate fountains where one could dip marshmallows, fruits, nut-crusted cheesecake. There were all sorts of cakes, pies, etc. there was ice cream they mixed atop the granolithic table if one wanted: mango, vanilla, ube, green tea, etc. with marshmallows, walnuts, cheesecake.

But one can only eat so much.

The staff was friendly and warm. Not the matapobre type at all. As I asked for the bill, the waiter asked if I had a discount card. Think Pen and Crowne Plaza membership cards. If I had, we’d have gotten a 33.3% discount on our food bill. Said card could have been obtained last night for P7k but after being burned by the Manila Pen card, I thought no more membership cards for me. We don’t eat in hotels too much and we’re thinking of not spending any nights in Manila hotels any longer. Out of town possibly in summer. Or maybe during the Christmas break? No plans yet. The Crowne Galleria hotel membership would entitle us to a discount in Holiday Inn Clark. Hmm. Worth a thought. Oh yes, Heat has an ala carte menu. And the waiter thoughtfully asked if we needed a parking pass.

***********

Sunday we were in Shang Mall after mass. yes, we didn’t watch the fight of Manny Pacquiao and dela Hoya live. As we went down Level 2, my son hoping to eat in Fish and Co, what greeted us was a whole crowd of men craning their necks outside the resto whose glass panels were boarded up with craft paper so that only those with particularly long necks who weren’t eating in the resto could see the boxing match. The doors of the resto were closed. So we hied off to the section of the second floor that had other restos. Son said CPK. We said we’d follow as husband and I went to Marks and Spencer to have a blouse of mine replaced. Got that in Power Plant but because M and S is a Store Specialists store it offers convenience: items bought in a different branch can be replaced with a smile in any other branch. That’s service. I showed my blouse to the clerk in the cashier area, she took note of the size I wanted, found one in the Alabang branch and asked if I wanted to have it brought to Shang. A week it would take, possibly. I nodded. No way we’d drive off to Alabang, not even for a nice blouse. haha. As we were about to go to CPK, son texted. “Cafe Provencal na lang” which is at the foot of CPK. Actually I prefer the choices available in CP (without the K). So I was happy.

Son ordered salmon risotto and asked permission if we could order the mozzarella/squid appetizer. I nodded. As we waited for the appetizer, we were given melba toast to spread their mayo/pesto spread on. Sarap. We asked for a second serving and they gave us. It helps I guess that the resto’s waiters have been there for years and “know” us. And the lady who owns manages CP is so gracious. Very genteel and sweet. Wow, the squid in the appetizer basket was so yummy: very tender. And the appetizer basket had a palette of dips served along with it. The serving dish is shaped like a palette, each hole with a different sauce/dip. Sarap: barbecue, pesto, thousand island, etc. Wasn’t too hungry so ordered paella which is no longer in the menu but could be requested. No longer has meat slices, just chorizo and shrimps. And some veggies. Husband ordered turkey which was served with sweet potato topped with walnuts and marshmallows with brown sugar. Also with green beans. He was swooning. But there were portions of the turkey leg that were tough, he said. Son liked the salmon risotto very much. Salmon was roasted, he said.

**********

some days ago we were in Pepper Lunch dsc01610at Power Plant. before deciding on which mall, I offered the following choices: Shang, Podium or Power Plant and of course son chose PP because of PL. He’s addicted. And he also wanted to get bread from Bread Talk.

While he was at BT, we went ahead to PL dsc01616and ordered his beef curry, I tried the Angus rib eye, husband had beef pepper lunch. We also ordered the kani salad. So good. IN the table next to ours, saw two old ladies each with a salad aside from their beef dishes. I teased my husband “look, they have bigger appetites than us.” but they were thinner: sigh. ANd I noticed in a poster on the wall that they now have an unagi-salmon combination. Husband said he’d get that next time. Angus beef was okay, but so is shimofuri. Couldn’t decide which I prefer more.

A waiter later told me too that PL in Shang will open 19 December. yehey, so we don’t have to go to PP everytime my son wants to eat at PL. At one point, one of the ladies in blue at PL was on her way out and home. She stopped by our table and greeted me by my name. I was stunned and asked her how she knew my name. This blog. So in case you read this, “Hi, lady in blue.”Sorry I failed to get your name. Since the first time I saw her at PL, she has been most gracious so she’s a favorite of mine in the resto. She adds cheer to it.

Lest  you think my family of three does notihing but eat, that’s not true. We also sleep and work/study, hahaha. And we watch movies. Like we did Bolt. Cute animated film, the story a feel-good one involving a dog who thought he had super powers when all along he was part of a TV show so everything was controlled. Shades of Truman Show. Oh yes, took pictures of the lift that ferries wheelchair-bound patrons of the theaters in Power Plant. Here goes.

dsc01618dsc01620

Note that in front of the door to the lift is a huge Christmas decor. Initially we thought that it blocked the entrance to the lift was the mall’s way of saying it was kaput. Son asked the security personnel of the theaters who easily moved it aside so I could get inside the lift.

Marky Cielo, RIP

In Philippine Showbiz/TV, Philippine TV, Philippine TV personalities on December 7, 2008 at 4:54 pm

I was half-watching Showbiz Central when I heard a eulogy of sorts for Marky Cielo. So I moved the laptop aside and indeed, I saw written under his picture: pumanaw na si Marky Cielo. Seeing that felt like a bad dream. Why only a few days ago, didn’t I see him on La Lola? Only a few weeks ago, didn’t I see him in SOP? Wasn’t it only last Saturday that I saw him in Startalk along with the funny sounding young man who met an accident (he caught fire in a game in Batangas) but has since recovered like the accident never was? Now Marky was dead? Are you sure? I really couldn’t believe it. I didn’t want to.

Years back, when he was one of the finalists of Starstruck, I was amazed by his dancing prowess. How skillfully he executed steps, how confident he was. And to think he was said to be an Igorot. No offense meant, but I was taken aback, more than pleased that a fellow Filipino from the Mountain Province was now dancing the way Marky was rather than some ritual dancing one often associates with the Igorots. As months and years passed after he won, his confidence grew even more. He was everywhere. And I was very happy for him. I thought, “Look where he is now. What hard work can do. what passion can do.” And today, at 20, he is gone.

Death is always such a mystery especially when it happens to the young. Marky Cielo, may your soul rest in peace. I’ll miss seeing you dance so excellently. Sigh. Dance up a storm in heaven.

Unang Hirit – 9nniversary

In Philippine TV on December 5, 2008 at 1:10 am

Happy Anniversary to my one and only early morning show habit: Unang Hirit. Of late I haven’t been too much into TV watching but I caught some portions of their anniversary specials these past days. Some snippets:

Rhea Santos has a new ‘do. She looks good in it, quite a drastic departure from her long locks, but it suits her just fine. She’s so pretty to begin with.

Saw Eagle, Suzie and Atty. Gaby doing the “Sino ang Baliw?” dance. Suzie gave it her all. So did Eagle. Gaby – hahahaha. She did justice to the laughter of a deranged woman.

Also caught the dance of Jolina, Regine and Olen Lim yesterday. Jolina and Regine have no star complex at all. though showbiz wise they are bigger than Olen, they let her take the center position. that’s what I like about UH – no pa-star among them. They’re one big happy family. Olen is so glamorous. She always looks so beautiful and elegant. She’s always smiling and that ups her charm even more. wonder if she smiles a lot even off-cam. I hope she does.

Caught the Britney Spears number of the hosts today. Again, Jolina and Regine didn’t take center stage. Instead it was Suzie out there in the middle. Rhea is so restrained in her movements she ends up looking sexy in her moves. Classy. Love was enjoying herself, apparently as were the rest.

The big winner was the Monday dance which I failed to catch except for a few excerpts earlier. that featured Rhea and Arnold in a singkil dance. The dance suited Rhea well, from the little that I saw.

Why didn’t they let Tristan dance? I’m sure he can. Pity.

Because I haven’t been watching too often I notice there’s a new girl on the show. I haven’t even caught her name. She seems to lack the energy exuded by the rest. I miss the Prieto (?) girl they had before. She used to come out in some commercials. Now that lady fit in with the rest very easily. Why don’t/didn’t they just hire her permanently?

The trailer of Bubble Gang (Channel 7) this week has been showing the Ateneo Blue Eagles taking part in the fun. Bubble Gang is shown Friday nights, around 10:30 pm. Don’t blame me if it’s shown earlier or later than that. The stations now have this bad habit of just saying a show is after another show rather than specifying definite time slots. So again, Bubble Gang after Survivor Philippines will likely have the Blue Eagles. Not complete though, I think.

A few minutes ago, or some 8 hours after the show, I checked youtube and found this. The boys apparently had a lot of fun and it showed. Hopefully, GMA7 will get them again. Even the coaches Jamike Jarin and Sandy Arespacochaga took part in the show. Got it from mitch15238. Thanks, mitch. Hope you don’t mind.
