About

a few check on this page, curious no doubt as to who could be writing on such disparate topics that span the gamut of nothing and everything. More than who i am, what should interest you are what drive me to write:  the many interesting things, people and events around me. They may or may not define me but they are why I write: the mundane, the sublime, again, anything, nothing, everything.

Catholic, a 53545558-year old, wife and mother. do those parameters define me?

yes, in the sense that I believe in what Fr. Arrupe said: “Nothing is more practical than finding God, that is, than falling in love in a quite absolute, final way. What you are in love with, what seizes your imagination, will affect everything. It will decide what will get you out of bed in the morning, what you will do with your evenings, how you will spend your weekends, what you read, who you know, what breaks your heart, and what amazes you with joy and gratitude. Fall in love, stay in love and it will decide everything.”

oh yes, another parameter that defines me in that it limits me in the physical sense, and no more than that, is my being wheelchair-bound.*

Oh, and I have another favorite quote, this time by Victor Hugo:

Be like the bird that, passing on her flight awhile on boughs too slight, feels them give way beneath her, and yet sings, knowing that she hath wings.

I think it speaks to me or of me. My boughs are slight, I cannot walk. Sometimes the spirit in me weakens but then before long, I chide myself and “sing” because I remember I have wings ~ in God, the angels and the saints, who buoy me back up.

My name is …never mind. What is important is that my name is “Nakaukit magpakailanman
Sa ‘king palad ang ‘yong pangalan,” “king” referring to God.” Now that counts.

*A FB friend says it is wrong for anyone to say our ilk are “wheelchair bound”. The right term he said is to describe ourselves as “people who use wheelchairs” because a wheelchair shouldn’t bind us to begin with. What do you think?

  1. Hi, I saw your post about Dr. Vinsons Pineda who you said helped you cure your “alopesia areata”. I have been diagnosed with AA too. My doctor at Medical City is initially doing a conservative approach (minoxidil and a medication) but said she might inject too if nothing happens. I want a more senior practitioner such as Dr. VP to handle the injection. Now my questions: Did you have a “bald patch” on your scalp too (I just want to know of we have similar symptoms)? How long did the treatment take before the hair grew again? How much did it cost you? Thank you 🙂

    • Hello, KC. I hope my answers will be of help or will guide you in your decisions. Yes, I had alopecia areata. It began on the crown of my head. I was a hair puller when stressed. I also remember what I did that may have caused it: back then they said one should brush one’s hair 100 times a day for luster. I didn’t count. And maybe it was an old wives’ tale. I enjoyed brushing my hair too because I would see dandruff flakes flying and landing on my blue pair of pants, so I thought I was doing myself a favor, ridding my scalp of dandruff. Then in December of 1974, I went to have a haircut in a neighborhood parloor. The one cutting my hair was alarmed. There was a huge bald spot on the crown of my head so she advised me to see my doctor. I did, the family pediatrician. I was in college. Going to school, I’d gather my hair on the sides and in front in a clip to cover the huge bald spot. Wrong medical advice (coconut oil, no shampooing) made things worse. I dreaded seeing hair upon hair on my coconut-oil soaked pillow and once, had the yaya of my nephew shampoo my hair with Johnson’s baby shampoo. After weeks of not having shampooed, it felt like heaven. I was in BAcolpod then for the Christmas break. BAck in Manila, I noticed my bald spot increasing in size, returned to the pedia who had me tested for lupus. When I tested negative, she sent me to Dr. VIncson Pineda who then began treatment using Phenol and Synalar. I had to have concoctions of these two prepared in Mercury. Phenol was liquid like Minoxidil, Synalar was a cream. I was allowed to shampoo using Sebaveen which smelled really clean rather than sweet like ordinary shampoos. After a few weeks my hair began to grow back. Then Dr. Pineda started injecting my scalp with Kenacort. Several injections my scalp in one visit. He also had me take Kenacort tablets. And Valium. To relax me I guess. By April my scalp began to fill up, prior to which even hair on the sides of my head had grown sparse. I think I started treatment by going monthly, then the visits grew infrequent as I showed signs of being on the heal. Cost? I don’t remember. This was in 1974, I was in first year college. Once in a while, when my maid tells me I have a bald spot the sign of a 10-centavo coin, I immediately apply Minoxidil which I noticed has Phenol. These days, when I go to the salon, the hair dressers always say my hair is so thick – I think it annoys them because blow drying it takes longer. Then I tell them I was bald once upon a time and they’re incredulous. Prayers and Dr. Pineda “saved” me. Good luck!

  2. just stumbled upon your blog and it’s impressive. i like your style. nahahasa ang visualization skills ko. parang nagbabasa at nanunood ako at the same time. I’ll be coming back for more 🙂

  3. Government agencies should start paying you for the inquiries you are handling for them 😉

Do you have any review on adult diapers? Just wondering. Mom tried three brands. Dr. P overnight, which used to be her favorite, leaked when she used it, well, overnight. Actually, she asked me to ask you if you had similar experience. Feeling niya kasi, sobra siyang uminom kaya nag leak…now ayaw ng uminom! Told her dehydration kalaban namin if she does so.

And Wally? Trained ako ni Larry Alcala, he he.

    Thanks Derdo!

    • haha, you noticed about the inquiries re government agencies? It occurred to me too and made me wonder why. People are scared about going to them, I guess? Because one never knows what one is up against? Sad no?

Re adult diapers, what variant of Dr. P did she use? I alternate between Dr. P and Tena, whichever is available. If Dr. P is, I get it as it’s cheaper. As for leaking, true what you said… if you drink a lot, the diaper will definitely leak, regardless of brand. Tell your mom that’s all right. A suggestion: tell her to get Salk’s incontinent pants (panties?) available through Amazon (and maybe, in drugstores in the US?). If the diaper leaks, the Salk thing will prevent it from going to the bedsheet or through one’s pants, most of the time. 4. Hi, may i know how do i contact ur friend who is working at Kino Consumer Philippines and manufactured by PT Kinocare Era Kosmetindo in Indonesia company.?

  5. the way you describe the food at in-yo is really something. you have such a talented way with words. can’t wait to have the time to look into your archives for more food write-ups

  6. Hi!

I was doing a little research about In-yo when I came across your blog. It’s probably safe to assume that you’re a seasoned writer. I was laughing out loud when I read your vivid, thorough, and amusing descriptions. Photos weren’t necessary, as I was able to visualize the “prawn sushi topped with mayo and served with lots of greens, specked with grape halves and other tiny bits of I don’t know what”, except for the “I don’t know what” part. Hahaha! =)

I’d like to ask for your permission, can I add a link on my website (which is still under construction) pointing to your blog, so that others may read your interesting articles as well? =)

    Alvin

  7. From J.C. Smith –

“Had more than your share of discrimination?

“the negative implications of my race notwithstanding.'”

Offhand, nothing grave that I can recall easily. What I was alluding to was the things I have read about how Filipinas are discriminated against abroad because of negative perceptions of our race.
